Every Shade of Blue [Indie Exclusive Limited Edition Transparent Orange Crush 2LP]
$39.98  39.98
chart cover

From the anthemic Virginia (Wind In The Night), an ode to Russells native state to which hes recently relocated (If it was solely up to me, Id live her for the rest of my life, he says), to the minimal but momentous Tiebreaker, Every Shade of Blue showcases The Head and the Hearts unique ability to dip its toes into a variety of musical genres. Its the bands knack for supreme melody, however, that remains a constant. And its why many of the songs on Every Shade of Blue, including the slow-rolling title track, Every Shade of Blue, which Russell says has a Sinatra vibe, are undeniable pop-radio missiles. The bands ability to create music that appeals to listeners common denominator, Russell says, is something he not only wont shy away from but is immensely proud of.

Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown [Indie Exclusive limited Edition Opaque Maroon LP]
$24.98  24.98
chart cover

New solo album from Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers (his first in 5 years), featuring songs written by lauded folk singer Greg Brown, whose songs have also been performed and recorded by Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Carlos Santana, Ani DiFranco, Gillian Welch, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and more.

For those who may need reminding, Greg Brown is the ultimate songwriter's songwriter. Over a forty-plus-year career, he's occupied the same rarefied air as Loudon Wainwright III and John Prine - a keen-eyed poet and diarist of the human condition. And he's done it mostly on his own. This is a man who put forty records out because he had to, Avett says. He made his own record label. He played the coffee shops, the bars, the little theaters. He built it. He's a world-class artist who did it all under the radar, which is just mind-blowing to me.

As Avett's new solo record makes clear, this collection is an expression of admiration and gratitude for one of his heroes. But it's also a reflection of his own artistry and ability as an interpreter. Though Brown's songs have been a part of his listening diet for decades, Avett gained a more profound appreciation once he put his own voice behind them.

I see him as a master songwriter, he continues. I don't think all of this work is indicative of his narrative. There is an autobiography through his forty records, but he is speaking for us. Like all the great authors and poets speak for us. He is in those records fully, but there's a lot more in them than just him.

And with Seth Avett Sings Greg Brown, he hopes that universal chord will resonate with listeners who are unfamiliar with Brown. With this record, I just hope they get an introduction, Avett says. And for anyone who can enjoy it, I hope it's a bridge into a place that otherwise perhaps they wouldn't have walked into.

For Avett, that bridge is one that he's certain he'll be crossing for years to come. I was listening to his One Night live record recently, and I was making discoveries left and right. It's never-ending. I haven't discovered Greg Brown. I am in the process of discovering him. And this record is just a single point in something that is ongoing. It's not an event that happened. It is happening.

Love Songs For Losers [LP]
$26.98  26.98
chart cover
Vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. 2022 release. Over the last ten years, The Lone Bellow have cast an indelible spell with their finespun songs of hard truth and redemptive beauty, faithfully delivered in hypnotic three-part harmony. In a departure from their past work with elite producers like Aaron Dessner of The National and eight-time Grammy-winner Dave Cobb, the Nashville-based trio struck out on their own for their album Love Songs for Losers, dreaming up a singular sound encompassing everything from arena-ready rock anthems to the gorgeously sprawling Americana tunes the band refers to as little redneck symphonies. Recorded at the possibly haunted former home of the legendary Roy Orbison, the result is an intimate meditation on the pain and joy and ineffable wonder of being human, at turns profoundly heartbreaking and sublimely transcendent.

Dancer [Indie Exclusive Limiteds Edition Half Blue/ Half Clear with White & Yellow Splatter LP]
$28.98  28.98
chart cover

Dancer came about quietly one night before I went to bed. Growing up one of my favorite movies was Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I really love the scene where Ferris is singing Twist and Shout by the Beatles on a parade float. Theres a four part harmony in that song that builds with so much excitement and energy and the movie does such a good job of representing that excitement with a literal parade. Thats where I think the songs opening moment came from sub consciously. At first I really only wrote the first verse and chorus. I reflected on the lyrics and started to imagine this character, the Dancer. I imagined a person who had left home to try and carve out a place for themselves in this world. They found themselves in a place where they were appreciated for what they do, not who they are. Something that I have felt in many ways in my life. Its not a stretch to imagine do these people actually like me or do they just think its cool that I play music? At times it has felt like a burden, the need to express myself through music. Dont get me wrong, I really do love it but I love it so much that I dont really feel like myself without it. Its become a huge part of my identity and sometimes I wish I could just be Scott but thats not really possible. Im always clicking my teeth in some rhythmic pattern or fidgeting with my left hand making chord shapes. I find myself constantly moving my body to an internal clock that feels inherently musical. I imagined the Dancer character didnt come from a lot of love. Over the past few years Ive taken a few trips out to the California desert, Death Valley and Joshua Tree to be specific and Ive really fallen in love with that part of the country. I thought maybe Dancer grew up in the desert, a barren place where you really have to look for life. She had left hoping to escape and find herself in a place beaming with life. Maybe her parents had passed on and left her the house she had grown up in back in the desert. She had never found true love or acceptance in her journey because she wasnt really running towards something, she was running away. She decides to move back home to the house she inherited and its not clear if shell face her demons or succumb to them.

Heavy Load Blues [Deluxe Edition 3LP]
$39.98  39.98
chart cover

Renowned quartet Govt Mule led by GRAMMY Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, guitar legend, and producer Warren Haynes has announced their first-ever blues album, Heavy Load Blues. The album encompasses an even mix of Haynes originals and revered covers originally made famous by the likes of Howlin Wolf, Elmore James, Junior Wells, Ann Peebles, Bobby Blue Bland, and even Tom Waits and the Animals.

For me, personally, it's kind of been on my list of things to do for years, shares Haynes. I didn't know if it was gonna be a solo album or a Govt Mule record. We play some traditional blues on stage from time to time and although its usually never more than a few songs per show, our approach to the blues is unique and based on our collective chemistry as a band. He adds, This album gave us a mission. Although in some way it was anything goes, we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in a traditional sense. Its not a blues/rock record it's a blues record. We wanted it sonically to sound different from a normal Govt Mule record.

Though technically considered a studio album, Heavy Load Blues was recorded live in the studio at The Power Station New England on analog tape, utilizing vintage guitars, amps and other equipment to capture an authentic sound. The 13-track album was produced by Haynes alongside engineer and co-producer John Paterno (Michael Landau, Robbie Williams, The Steve Gadd Band).

One of the many standout tracks is the Junior Wells standard Snatch It Back and Hold It, which allowed the band to freely cover a classic while sandwiching a spontaneous jam called Hold It Back in the middle of a soulful, stirring interpretation that was given a decidedly funky groove. In that regard, while several titles may sound familiar to blues enthusiasts, the band Haynes, Matt Abts [drums], Danny Louis [keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals], and Jorgen Carlsson [bass] often opted to put its own spin on them. I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebodys Home, originally recorded by Ann Peebles, is one of the few songs on the record the band has previously played live. On their version, Haynes nimble guitar riffs are played out over a solid foundation of organ and rhythm, resulting in a kind of funk-like finesse. For the Howlin Wolf song, I Asked Her For Water, She Gave Me Gasoline, Govt Mule, who are known for pushing the parameters while melding a variety of genres rock, R&B, jam, funk, jazz, and practically everything in-between, opted for a heavy, up-tempo and funky version that is a far cry from the original.

Night & Love
$14.98  14.98
chart cover

Kkht Arkhis the Ukrainian project founded in 2018 by Dmitry Marchenko. The debut album Night & Love was initially released on the Finnish label Livor Mortis in 2019 and its now seeing a worldwide reissue via Brooklyn label Sacred Bones.

Dmitrys intent to experiment with standard black metal canons previously seen at play in Through the Branches to Eternity EP (2018) solidify further on Night & Love, he mentions back then I had an idea of combining Darkthrones Transilvanian Hunger type of black metal with early Internazionale or Croatian Amorvibe.

Described as ambient or atmospheric black metal, this debut presents Kkht Arkhs signature dichotomy of harsh traditional early Norwegian black metal and the more ethereal and delicate melodies. On the other hand the lyrics are romantic and melancholic, clearly influenced by a stark Gothic imagery, and serve as an extra layer of mystery to the already suggestive body of work. The album beings with a soft acoustic intro in As the Night Falls... before descending into the raw and raucous Elegy for the Memory of Me and Den Venstre Hnd PDen Hyre, both songs that are drenched in the more traditional black metal style of raspy, high-pitched vocals, dense, tremolo- picked riffs and fast paced drums. It is however songs like Night and Love that really set this album apart. Night is a softly spoken word ambient track that with a beautiful piano synth work that permeates throughout it aids in the romantic delivery and conjuring of imagery of the night. Love is a spellbinding and melancholic song, equal in its romanticism but one that displays a deeper sorrow and tenderness supported by calming field recordings of trickling water.

The intertwining of black metal, dark folk and ambient repeats itself, culminating in a quietly hummed outro ...And Never Ends (Eternal Love) that alludes to and completes the albums first track.

White Trash Revelry [LP]
$22.98  22.98
chart cover

From their earliest self-released EPs to 2021s Cast-Iron Pansexualthe album that earned praise from Rolling Stone and American Songwriter for its examination of faith, sexual identity, and self-acceptanceAdeem the Artist has continued to build a following by blending Appalachian musical influences and poetic flair with a healthy dose of comedic instinct.

"Humor has always been a part of my life," explains the Eastern Tennessee-based songwriter, citing comedians Andy Kaufman and Sarah Silverman as artistic influences in addition to musicians like John Prine and Blind Boy Fuller. Growing up, first in North Carolina and later in Syracuse, New York, Adeem quickly realized that with the right delivery, dark jokes could offer a socially acceptable way to open up about the tough stuff. "My parents are both from a lot of generational trauma, and I was born right at the heart of it, they say. Humor is just how we survived."

Adeems twang-studded gospel represents a worldview too often excluded from modern country music, one that converts shame into celebration. It turns out, folks like the sound of embracing the parts of ourselves were told to buryso much so that when Adeem turned to fans to support the follow-up album to Cast-Iron Pansexual, thousands obliged. Dubbing it a redneck fundraiser, the seventh-generation Carolinian raised the money to release White Trash Revelry by asking for one dollar at a time through social media. With four quarters and a Venmo, they joked, baby, you can make this dream come true. Adeem emerged from the fundraiser $15,000 later with a name for their new record labelFour Quarters Recordsand the resolve to write an unapologetic next chapter.

White Trash Revelry delivers, tempering Adeems beloved comedic sensibilities with vulnerable moments and highly specific personal details. Tender strings and clear vocals on "Middle of a Heart" give way to nuanced storytelling about small-town rites of passage and mixed messages about love, violence, and honor. And "Heritage of Arrogance" tackles larger societal issues, struggling to reconcile open-minded intentions with the deeply flawed and historical narratives too often peddled by white Southerners. But the albums namesake revelry is around every corner, too.

"They play country songs in heaven, but in hell we play em loud," they sing on the standout single Going to Hell. Regardless of your thoughts on the afterlife, Adeem sings with an easy-going charisma that makes it easy to want to follow themto heaven, to hell, or to some raucous, welcoming party in between.

The nine songs that comprise You Become The Mountain are heavily inspired by the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, meditation, long-distance running and Silversteins work as a special education teacher. Expanding on the minimalist approach heard on How on Earth, Silverstein invited pedal-steelist Barry Walker Jr. (North Americans, Rose City Band) and bassist Alex Chapman (Parson Redheads, Evan Thomas Way) to round-out an increasingly meditative sound. Led by the spirit of late Detroit musician Ted Lucas, Silverstein was moved to create an album featuring both instrumental and lyric-based compositions. Silverstein casts a wide net in 40 minutes, offering fans of both traditional and experimental folk entry points into his universe. Primarily tracked live and void of heavily processed sounds, the LP serves as a proper introduction to a songwriter who celebrates patience and restraint in the highest regard.
